The Guardian, Lecture 05.10.2026

In today's lecture we watched the movie "The Guardian" with Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher. The film is about rescue swimmers of the US Coast Guard. Their job is to jump into the cold, stormy sea and save people's lives.
Kevin Costner plays Ben Randall, an experienced rescue swimmer who becomes a teacher after a terrible accident. Ashton Kutcher plays Jake Fischer, a young and talented swimmer who wants to be the best, but at first he mostly thinks about himself.
For me, the movie shows a lot about career management. Talent alone is not enough. Jake has to learn discipline, teamwork and how to deal with failure. And he needs a good mentor who pushes him, but also believes in him.
I also liked the role of Ben Randall. He shows that a good leader does not only give orders. He prepares his team for hard situations and helps them grow. At the end of a career it is also important to pass on your knowledge to the next generation.
My takeaway: find mentors who challenge you, work hard on yourself, and never forget that success is often a team effort.
